Stig opened his jaws reflectively as the injections of the reversal drugs returned him to normal. The flashes of fire that were the tracks of dust moles sparkling in the cabin light disappeared as his senses returned to real time. Now they hung, seemingly suspended, in the air. The heaters in his overlay cloak adjusted to the change in his metabolism. The remaining effects of the slow-life drugs were nullified and he began to think and move at normal speed. At last something was happening! He moved his massive head in the direction of the monitors. The yellow glow on the panel told him that the sentinel systems had observed something that they had been programmed to watch for. With only a slight twinge from an arm that hadn’t moved in months, he touched the replay button. The screen backed its way through events until it reached the place that caused the yellow signal to go on and trip the injections before schedule. Stig watched with growing interest which quickly grew to frenzy as the recorded event played again. The sensors detected the entry into the suns system of a small but inordinately disturbing mass. The thing that made it interesting was the fact that it happened instantly. There was no drifting in from outside the system. It appeared all at once as if created in an instant from nothingness. The signature was unmistakable. Even though the mass was dark as far as radiation signaling went, there was only one thing that Stig knew that caused such a reaction. The long-sought Shan were here! Now there was another chance to capture the secrets that the prey had kept from the Splendid Race for so long. A chance at the immortality virus, and the faster-than-light drive that had eluded the Ann Thaar and their subject races for so long. Now Stig would have his chance, in all the history of the Ann Thaar there had never been such a chance. If he played his stalk well, he might become the greatest and most feared of the Ann Thaar. With all time in front of him to consolidate his empire, what might he not do?

The universe beckoned to Stig. Centuries spent in real-time, not the stagnant fakery of slow-life dictated by the enormous distances between the stars, but realtime. Time filled with hunting wild prey as his ancestors had, now a thing left only for the mightiest of the Ann Thaar leadership. If he gained the treasures of the Shan, he would be the mightiest of all. Power over all his rivals. All the mates he could dream of throughout time. His jaws snapped in imagined ecstacy as he dreamed of hunting the warm prey of countless worlds. Gobbets of flesh dripping with salty blood. Stig shuddered at the thought! Now to lay the trap. He could barely control himself. This must be done right. There could be no escape of the prey this time. He gained control of himself.
